Governor and Ms Annus visit Bunbury and Greenbushes

The Governor and Ms Susie Annus visited Bunbury and Greenbushes as part of the Governor’s Regional Visit Program, from Tuesday 12th – Wednesday 13th March 2019.

This was the Governor’s third regional visit, with visits undertaken last year to the East Kimberley and Albany.

During the visit, the Governor and Ms Annus met with representatives from local schools and organisations and received updates on plans for community areas and industry.

“Our visit to Bunbury and Greenbushes this week was critical.

Before this trip I hadn’t been to Bunbury in over a decade – I had visited many times when I was a kid and a fair bit during the time I was in politics. On my return this week I didn’t recognise it, but what I see now is fantastic.

Bunbury is becoming a major centre of industrialisation in the fourth generation type industry. It always has been a substantial agricultural and mining sector but we now have a situation where the product of this region is in massive international demand.

Greenbushes has the largest lithium mine in the world – Talison Lithium’s Greenbushes Mine – building on tin and tantalum mining, which is still a by-product. Lithium is the basic material of the fourth industrial revolution, the basic material of battery technology which will drive part of the response to climate change.

The City of Bunbury has its act together. The civic figures are very conscious of its prospect in becoming WA’s second biggest city, a hub for communications and industry.

I was impressed with the superb centre for the renaissance of Noongar languages at the Noongar Boodjar Language Cultural Corporation.

Similarly, the Djidi Djidi Aboriginal School is a brilliant primary school with innovative teaching and community relationships that involve close interaction with the indigenous community – a brilliant way of handling indigenous education.

The Dolphin Discovery Centre has been beautifully upgraded and there are exciting plans for beach front development with the Bunbury Waterfront Project.

And no one should miss the Bunbury Farmers Market – it is a must stop point between Perth and our South”.
