The Governor spoke about the importance of Australian children’s and young adult literature. The Literature Centre formally welcomed the Governor as their first Patron at the event and thanked him for his pivotal role in establishing the Centre as a Project of National Significance in 1992. The annual lecture honours the extraordinary West Australian, Leslie Rees, who started his career as a stringer for The West Australian, based in Fremantle, before heading to London where he became a fabled theatre critic. He returned to Australia, living in Sydney where he combined a career of creating wonderful picture books and children’s novels, writing travel books with his wife, Coralie Clarke, and setting up and running ABC radio drama. The Centre is in its 27th year and is recognised as the leading Centre of Excellence for Children’s and Young Adult Literature in Australia.
