Governor chats with accomplished young West Australian writer, speaker and commentator Mr Dylan Storer

The Governor met with Mr Dylan Storer, a highly accomplished young West Australian storyteller and advocate for social justice issues. Dylan grew up in the remote Kimberley region of WA and is now based in Wollongong, NSW.

The Governor was keen to hear about Dylan’s achievements, his early admission to Wollongong University and his future ambitions. The Governor also asked Dylan about distance and remote learning in WA.

About Dylan Storer

Dylan grew up in Fitzroy Crossing, a remote town in the Kimberley. It’s there he discovered his love and passion for storytelling and social justice issues. Dylan began as a broadcaster at Wangki Radio, a community station in Fitzroy Crossing, that led to him getting involved with SYN Media (SYN Media is an organisation run by a community of young people that provides broadcasting and training opportunities for young Australians. They believe young people should be creators, not just consumers of media).

For two years Dylan hosted The Edge, a weekly regional current affairs radio program which was broadcast throughout the North-West of Australia and into Melbourne. The Edge won the 2019 Community Radio Award for Excellence in News and Current Affairs.

Dylan has also written for The Guardian and the Foundation for Young Australians, and has worked with the ABC, UN Youth Australia and appeared on ABC’s Q&A program twice.

Dylan is passionate about building a better future for everyone, especially young people of today. He has advocated for and given evidence before the Commonwealth Parliament to extend voting rights to Australians who are 16 and 17 years-old and has spoken at a variety of events such as the Festival for Dangerous Ideas.

Dylan has received the following awards;

• 2019 – Best Current Affairs Feature – Student Youth Network
• 2018 – Under 18 Volunteer of the Year – Student Youth Network
• 2017 – Outstanding Youth Contribution – Community Broadcasting Sector
• 2015 – Premiers Active Citizenship Award – Youth – Derby/West Kimberley Council, WA Government
