The Governor watching welcome presentation in Bilya Koort Boodja Centre Governor tours new Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge in Northam June 12, 2020 By Adele Hollywood As part of the push to encourage regional travel within Western Australia, the Governor conducted his 11th regional visit with a day trip to Northam on Thursday, 11th June 2020. Just an hour and a half drive, Northam is approximately 96km east of Perth. Whilst in Northam, the Governor toured the new Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture And Environmental Knowledge. “The most impressive teaching of Aboriginal culture that I have seen in a museum. The combination of technology and storytelling to educate was a truly immersive experience. This is a must see for West Australians” Governor The Governor also braved the wild weather to take in the Northam Silo Art and enjoyed a meal and ginger beer at Summer Creek Restaurant and Brewery. The Governor will continue to support to our State’s social and economic recovery in a post-COVID era by showcasing local tourism opportunities and places of interest as part of his regional visit program. A must visit attraction to learn about Nyoongar people and highlight land management practices that draws upon the knowledge of the land’s traditional custodians. Visit to the Northam Silo Art as part of FORM’s PUBLIC Silo Trail FORM’s PUBLIC Silo Trail is putting regional Western Australia up in lights, bringing world class murals to grain silos, transformer boxes and iconic infrastructure in unexpected towns right across the state. FORM’s PUBLIC Silo Trail, with its first silo mural painted in Northam back in March 2015, kicked off a national trend with painted silos dominating rural landscapes right across the country in VIC, SA, QLD and NSW. Collectively these form the Australian Silo Art Trail. This is a fully operational working site with no access any closer than sign posted. There is a one-way pullover place for cars and caravans and photos can be taken of the silos from there. Lunch with the owners of Summer Creek. A family friendly farm with a taste of the country. Using fresh produce grown themselves or locally they have their own bee hives and brew their own beer. Try a wood fired pizza while you sip a West Australian wine or a homemade lemonade.
