Meeting with CIVMEC Executives

The Governor met with CIVMEC for an update on the new submarine facility being built in WA.

CIVMEC is an integrated, multi-disciplinary construction and engineering services provider to the oil and gas, metals and minerals, infrastructure and marine and defence sectors.

Present at the meeting was Mr Rodney Bowes, Executive Group Manager – Proposals; Mr Kevin Deery, Chief Operating Officer; Mr James Fitzgerald, Executive Chairman and Mr Patrick Tallon, Chief Executive Officer.

The $12.5 million Submarine Rescue Facility is part of the Australian Defence Force’s broader $255 million submarine rescue services program for Australia’s submarine fleet, led by marine services contractor Pheonix International.

Upon completion, the facility will house a rapid launch and recovery system, hyberbaric treatment unit, and maintenance training and testing infrastructure with a seven-metre deep pool.

Reflecting on the meeting, the Governor said

“This meeting was also a chance for an update on progress with our Ocean Patrol Vessel. This has a really interesting prospect of further iterations of the de facto corvette for anti submarine, mine sweeping and surface fighting capabilities. Shades of WWII when Australia built and operated over 50 corvettes for multi purposes.”
