Visit to Manning Men’s Shed for Men’s Health Week 2020

The Governor met with members of the Manning Men’s Shed on Wednesday 17th June to highlight the importance of Men’s Health Week (15-21 June 2020).

The Governor is proud to be Patron of the Men’s Sheds of WA and supports the work of this important community development organisation.

“There is no better place to reflect on the significance of Men’s Health Week than at a Men’s Shed.

This has been one of the great new movements around our community which has been of enormous assistance, particularly in this period where the COVID-19 pandemic has proved so challenging to social and community institutions.

It was good to see the Men’s Shed at Manning which I am sure reflects Men’s Sheds everywhere. They play a substantial role in keeping a sense of balance and purpose in the lives of so many retired men.”

During the visit, the Governor met with local members, participated in wood crafting, furniture making, metalwork and repairing various items belonging to members of the local community. The Governor also shared a discussion with Shed members over morning tea.

The Manning Men’s Shed was reopened with restrictions on the 25th May following a lock down period during COVID-19. Mr. Keith Hayes, Chairman of the Shed Management Committee said their Shed had been running for five years now and currently has a membership of nearly 100 men.

“The Sheds have been a lifesaver for people who would otherwise be sitting at home. We get a lot of value out of the collaborations we have with organisations like Como Rotary Club and working on community projects like the memorial arch at Clontarf College and a mentorship program with senior students at local schools.”

Part of the Manning Men’s Shed philosophy is to ‘create an environment which encourages men’s health and wellbeing’.

About Men’s Health Week

The theme for this year’s Men’s Health Week is ‘Working together for Men’s Health’.

In Australia, Men’s Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men’s health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country each June.

The approach celebrates the strengths of men, the contributions they make and the important role they play in society.
