Governor meets son of world-renowned authority on medieval palaeography (the study of handwriting)

The Governor met with Bunbury resident Mr Bernhard Bischoff, son of Professor Bernhard Bischoff (1906-1991), a world-renowned authority on medieval palaeography (the study of handwriting).

Professor Bernhard Bischoff had a collection of more than one hundred fragments of medieval manuscripts and early printed books from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. The collection has now been acquired by Monash University Library. View the collection and more information 

“One of the pleasures of being Governor are the times when you get to meet interesting Western Australians, largely out of sight, who turn up with a great personal story. Bernard Bischoff has been a contributor to our society since he moved here from Germany in 1969. He is particularity proud of his father of the same name who was a great scholar of medieval paleography. As such, an important source of knowledge on the texts and manuscripts of Anglo Saxon England. Much of his father’s work is now at Monash University. Bernard himself has a nice collection of manuscripts.”
