The Governor addressing guest at Netball WA Lunch Celebrating West Australian Netball September 25, 2020 By Adele Hollywood This was a fantastic event and a great opportunity for Netball WA’s collective organisations (Netball WA, West Coast Fever, Shooting Stars) to bring together some of their most influential supporters and stakeholders, and engage them in a conversation about the role of netball in creating women leaders and role models in WA and empowering women in our communities. The Governor spoke on the role of women’s sport in helping shape and advance communities, and in creating female leaders and role models for the future. “Netball is ingrained in the psyche of pretty much every female in Australia. Its a sport that you can play at any age and is so important socially. Its a great place to make friends for life.” The Governor In attendance was Hon Julie Bishop – Patron of Shooting Stars, who spoke to the collaborative work within the local community, schools and service providers that the Shooting Stars does to affect genuine change in the lives of more than 350 students Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls. Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses netball and other vehicles to drive its primary vision of increasing school attendance rates for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) girls living in remote communities and regional towns to 80-90%. Hon Julie Bishop – Patron of Shooting Stars Mr Deane Pieters – Chair of West Coast Fever, who spoke about the Fevers fantastic start to the season remaining undefeated after seven rounds and their clear vision of advancing netball and advancing communities. Netball is the largest female participation sport in Western Australia, having grown significantly over the last 10 years to more than 240,000 participants in 2020 and is played in every major city and town across the State. From the grassroots to the elite, Netball WA has a holistic approach to the growth and development of the sport of netball.
