In support of Women’s Health Week, the Governor visited the Women and Infants Research Foundation

The Governor visited the Women and Infants Research Foundation (WIRF) as part of a recent visit to King Edward Memorial Hospital to mark the beginning of Women’s Health Week.

Greeted by Deborah Attard Portughes, Chief Operations Director, the Governor was particularly interested to hear of current COVID-19 research being spearheaded out of Western Australia by WIRF’s Chief Scientific Director, Professor John Newnham AM.

As the 2020 Senior Australian of the Year, Prof Newnham updated the Governor on a number of major research findings that are changing the landscape of preterm birth prevention, latest projects underway in the fields of women’s cancers and women’s mental health, and an update of his COVID-19 video series.

To ensure that those pregnant or considering a pregnancy had the most up-to-date and correct information, WIRF created a weekly video series delivered by Professor John Newnham which sought to provide important information for all pregnant women and their families about the impact of COVID-19 on their health and that of their pregnancy.

WIRF is one of Australia’s leading organisations that is dedicated to improving the health of women and infants. Born of a vision to understand and improve the difficult and complex health problems faced by mothers, babies and the women of Western Australia, the WIRF is now an internationally recognised medical research institute. In 2016, WIRF celebrated 40 years of research, education and outreach.

The Governor is proud to be patron of the Women and Infants Research Foundation.
