The Governor delivering the keynote speech at UWA Defence and Security Program launch UWA Defence and Security Program launch and WA Indo-Pacific Defence & Defence Industry Strategy Series September 3, 2020 By Adele Hollywood The Governor delivered introductory remarks at the launch of the UWA Defence & Security Program launch. The program will collaborate with the Federal and WA Governments, industry and academics to identify new priority interests and areas of research leading to the delivery of major strategic policy papers to Defence, with recommendations to Government of ways in which Australia can further its strategic interests. Prof. Stephen Smith – Professor of Public International Law, UWA, Hon. Paul Papalia MLA – Minister for Defence Issues, Hon. Kim Beazley AO – Governor of Western Australia, Hon. David Johnston – Former Defence Minister. This event provided a great opportunity to get an idea of what the Program is about but also provided a great opportunity to hear some discussion on how the 2020 Defence Strategic Update will be underpinning Defence capabilities and industry into the foreseeable future. Australia is going to spend $270 billion over the next decade on its defence capabilities. The Governor delivering the Keynote at UWA Defence and Security Program Launch Earlier in the day, the Governor delivered the Keynote speech at the WA Indo-Pacific Defence & Defence Industry Strategy Series Workshop. The WA Indo-Pacific Defence & Defence Industry Strategy Series, convened by the Perth USAsia Centre and Defence West for the WA Minister for Defence Issues and the Government of Western Australia, will enable WA’s Defence strategic scholars, Defence Industry leaders and the WA Government to thoroughly examine the rapid changes in Australia and WA’s Defence strategic environment in 2020. The Governor at WA Indo-Pacific Defence & Defence Industry Strategy Series Workshop The priority focus of the inaugural workshop was to analyse and assess the implications for WA of the Commonwealth Government’s 2020 Defence Strategic Update and 2020 Force Structure Plan, and more broadly WA and Australia’s new Defence strategic environment in 2020.
