Perron Institute: Making a Difference

The Governor paid a visit to the Perron Institute to receive and update of current research projects and the future direction of Western Australia’s longest established medical research institute.

On arrival, CEO – Steve Arnott introduced the Governor to Professor Alan Robson AO CitWA, Chair, Professor Steve Wilton, Director of Research, Norman Palmer, Special Projects and Professor David Blacker, Medical Director & Consultant Neurologist.

The team at Perron updated the Governor about their journey during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the impacts it had on the Institute both good and bad. The lessons learnt on how Perron operated and adapted during COVID-19 have them well placed moving forward and has enabled them to focus on important research and medical breakthroughs.

The Perron Institute undertake cutting edge research on a broad spectrum of conditions including stroke, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, muscular dystrophy, myositis and multiple sclerosis.

The future direction is to position Perron as world class Institute in specific areas of research namely precision medicines and disease origins. Another focus area is clinical applications including treatment regimes, drug trial management and participation.

One of their special strengths is the connection between the Institute’s laboratory research and its 15 specialist clinics. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to translate research outcomes into treatments aimed at providing a better quality of life for millions of people around the world who suffer with devastating neurological conditions.
