The Governor attended a Virtual Rhodes Scholarship Reception to introduce the shortlisted candidates for the 2021 Rhodes Scholarship to the Selection Committee members.

Each year, nine Rhodes Scholarships are available for outstanding Australians to study at the University of Oxford. One Rhodes Scholarship is offered in each of the States (NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA and TAS) and three for Australia-at-Large.

About 100 Rhodes Scholars are selected from around 60 nominated countries around the world every year, with two Global Scholars selected from any other country. There are now over 5,000 Rhodes Scholars worldwide, and alumni connections are growing.

“Max is in for a real treat over the next three years. It will be three years of heaven. Oxford is lovely and the environment is fantastic. I have always said that if you take the top 10% of every university in Australia and put them all together you would have Oxford University. That’s the type of operative environment Max will be in, which he is not unfamiliar with, but which is supercharged. Max will find it extremely interesting. He will meet very interesting people that will reach out to him because of the work he is doing. It is unbelievably critical particularly in this era. The work on large data studies will provide much needed insight.
