The Governor visits the Perth Bell Tower

The Governor attended a tour of the Perth Bell Tower this week to experience the sound and spectacle of one of the most historic rings in the world.

Greeted by Richard Offen, Chair, Swan Bells Foundation, Gerry Lyng – Manager and Terry Walton – Guide, the Governor enjoy a behind the scenes look at their bell ringing chamber, where one of their expert bell ringers gave a brief history of the Bell Tower and the art of bell ringing.

The ANZAC Bell is one of the first bells to use 3D printing in the design. Gold was added to the copper and tin during the casting process, reflecting a tradition dating back hundreds of years.

Installed in October 2018, the ANZAC Bell’s first official ring was the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, the 11th November 2018, shortly after 11am. It is the largest bell of its kind ever made in Australia and was cast in Perth, Western Australia. The ANZAC Bell is expected to last over 500 years and weighs 6,500 Kg.

The bell ringers are an essential part of The Bell Tower. They are fortunate to have an amazing group of people who travel to the Tower week in, week out to volunteer and assist with the day to day activities and ring the historic bells. The Governor was shown the bell ringing chamber and was invited to ring the bell.

The Governor then got to meet some of the hard working volunteers that ring the bells daily.

The Governor then ventured to the top of the Bell Tower to see the spectacular view.

The Perth Bell Tower is an iconic building in Perth’s landscape and is a must see for all visitors both foreign and domestic. Filled with fascinating historic content and boasting a unique and distinctive design, it has become an must see tourist attraction for Perth and Western Australia.
