Governor officiates at WA 2021 Australian of the Year Awards Ceremony

The Governor officiated at the 2021 Western Australian of the Year Awards ceremony, hosted by Auspire – The Australia Day Council of Western Australia.

Western Australia’s 16 nominees included doctors and scientists, a rural tourism ambassador, the founder of Plastic Free July, an Aboriginal arts and culture leader, a young advocate for voluntary assisted dying and the man who urged Australians to support healthcare workers during COVID-19.

Four winners were chosen across four categories – the State’s Local Hero, Young Australian, Senior Australian and Australian of the Year.

The winners below will now represent WA at the overall 2021 Australian of the Year Awards on Australia Day eve next year:

  • WA Australian of the Year: Professor Helen Milroy (Australia’s first Indigenous doctor)
  • WA Senior Australian of the Year: Dr Richard Walley OAM (Champion of Aboriginal culture)
  • WA Young Australian of the Year: Grace Forrest (Founder and Director of Walk Free)
  • WA Local Hero: Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (Founder of Plastic Free July)
