The Governor congratulating an award winner at the Good Sammys celebration of International Day for People with Disability Celebrating International Day for People with Disability with Good Sammys December 4, 2020 By Adele Hollywood As patron of Good Sammy, the Governor attended an event to recognise the achievements of their staff and young people by focusing on ability, rather than disability, and increasing the awareness of disability issues in the community and to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. The Governor was asked to present the Sarah Potter Awards as well as winners of the Good Sammy’s Got Talent Competition. The Sarah Potter Awards are cash awards of up to $1k each to 10 selected staff with disabilities that applied for these awards to help them develop in and contribute to the community. The Governor presenting a Sarah Potter award to a Good Sammy staff member Just like others, persons with disabilities want a dignified and productive life. Good Sammy’s has been providing employment opportunities for people with disability for more than 60 years. In the 19-20 Financial Year Good Sammy Options: Provided 231 students with work experience; Supported 183 clients to achieve their goals and navigate the NDIS throughout their employment journey; Employed 263 people in their social enterprises to build skills and gain work experience; Provided development opportunities through employment to 22 employees with disability; Supported 4 of these people to find employment with other employers; and Awarded 37 scholarships to support the development goals of people with disability. The Governor meeting the wonderful staff at Good Sammy More than 300 students living with disability have been able to gain valuable work skills in a supportive environment through the School Transition to Employment Program (STEP) in a partnership with WA high schools and Good Sammy Options.
