Visit to Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative

The Governor visited the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative at Welshpool today for a tour of the world-class facility, and a briefing on the impact of COVID-19 and changing export markets on the live lobster export industry.

The 4000sqm facility is a staging point for rock lobsters caught up and down the WA coastline and has a storage capacity of 80 tonnes of live lobster in a climate-controlled aquaculture system. Today’s tour showcased the domestic capability of the operation and the aquaculture industry in Western Australia.

The Co-op led by CEO Matt Rutter and Chair Basil Lenzo has been working hard to ensure the continued success of the industry and its members despite recent challenges, and today the Governor said he was inspired by the operations of the co-operative and the way it had delivered fabulously for it’s membership.

“It is world-class and at the peak of a brilliant, ecologically sustainable industry.” said the Governor.

The Governor is proud to support West Australian industry.
