Welcoming new Australian Citizens at the City of South Perth Australia Day Ceremony

Welcoming new Australian citizens at ceremonies on either side of the ‘Derbarl Yerrigan’.

Community spirit, cultural recognition and a commitment to adopt citizenship of a new country were well and truly on show today at ceremonies across Western Australia.

The Governor attended two ceremonies on either side of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River).

City of South Perth Australia Day Ceremony

The Governor began his day at the City of South Perth Australia Day Morning Ceremony, joining Mayor Greg Milner and other guests in officially welcoming the City’s 165 new Australian Citizens.

A moving Welcome to Country from Joe Collard and Birrdiya Dancers, as well as stirring performances by the New Era Baha’i Choir provided the perfect backdrop for today’s citizenship ceremony which also included the presentation of the AUSPIRE Citizen of the Year Awards.

The Governor delivered his Australia Day address telling the new Australian citizens – “Each of our new citizens bring enormous strength to our country and to Western Australia. Your valued contributions help to deepen our shared knowledge, global and cultural understanding and enhance our cultural vibrancy.

It is my privilege to be welcoming you formally as citizens of this great nation.”

City of Perth Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony

The Governor also attended the City of Perth Citizenship and Awards Ceremony joining Perth Lord Mayor, the Right Honourable Basil Zempilas in congratulating 43 people from 22 countries in officially becoming Australian citizens.

The ceremony included a Welcome to Country by Mr Neville Collard, performances by the City of Perth brass band and a reading of the Affirmation, before the Governor helped present the AUSPIRE City of Perth Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

In his Australia Day address the Governor told the new Australian citizens and their families that he could not be prouder of the community spirit on display, applauding their decision to adopt citizenship and for the enormous strength they bring to our country and our state.

“I sincerely hope that you love this country and our state as much as my family and I do, and I hope you build a future of peace and prosperity in this wonderful country.”
