In accordance with usual practise and as part of his constitutional role the Governor today issued the writs for the State election to be held on Saturday March 13, 2021, signalling the start of Western Australia’s Caretaker Conventions period across the WA public sector.

The Governor today received WA Premier Mark McGowan and Deputy Premier Roger Cook for a special Executive Council meeting to carry out the issuing of the writs, under strict COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Following the signing, the writs were then officially handed over by the Governor to the Western Australian Electoral Commissioner, Mr Robert Kennedy for the final step in the process. The writs direct the Electoral Commissioner to proceed with elections in all Legislative Assembly districts and Legislative Council regions.

The issuing of the writs followed the formal dissolution of the Legislative Assembly on January 29, at which point the 40th Parliament ceased to exist. A new Parliament will be sworn in after the election on March 13.
