Ms Carmel Barbagallo is sworn in by the Governor as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia Swearing in for Ms Carmel Barbagallo as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia February 1, 2021 By Carole Kerr The Governor today swore in Ms Carmel Barbagallo SC as a Judge of the District Court of Western Australia, Judge of the Children’s Court of Western Australia and Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. In line with the Western Australian Government’s current COVID-19 related restrictions, today’s swearing-in was pared back to ensure limited attendance and safe social distancing and protocols. Ms Barbagallo takes up her new position tomorrow – Tuesday February 2 2021. Ms Barbagallo’s Biography: Ms Barbagallo has 25 years’ legal experience commencing in general practice in regional Queensland before taking on a variety of roles in the ACT, Victoria and Western Australia. Highly regarded in legal circles, she has spent many years managing and conducting the most demanding, complex and important criminal prosecutions in the State. She commenced her legal career in 1989 in regional Queensland, in 1995 taking on her first role as a prosecutor with the Director of Public Prosecutions, Queensland before being quickly promoted to Crown Prosecutor in 1996. In January 2001 Ms Barbagallo SC relocated to Western Australia as State Prosecutor for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (WA) (ODPP). From October 2005 to January 2008 she filled the role of Senior State Prosecutor at the ODPP and in January 2008 moved to Victoria and took up a position as Crown Prosecutor at Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers. In that role she had the responsibility to prosecute lengthy and complex criminal prosecutions and also to provide high level advice to the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions. In a further move back to Western Australia in November 2010 Ms Barbagallo became the Consultant State Prosecutor at the ODPP. From 2017 to the current time, Ms Barbagallo has been the Deputy Director of the ODPP in Western Australia. She was appointed as Senior Counsel in Western Australia in December 2016 and took on the responsibility for the case management and prosecution of Bradley Robert Edwards, believed to be the most expensive and possibly the longest running prosecution ever conducted in the State.
