The Governor is escorted into the official proceedings at Parliament House, Perth.

The Governor today officially declared open the 41st Parliament of Western Australia.

Addressing members of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly, the Governor delivered an official address welcoming newly elected members, thanking outgoing members and outlining the WA Government’s agenda for the next four years.

With COVID restrictions currently in place, attendance at Parliament was limited and much of the usual ceremonial aspects were pared back.

Today’s proceedings did however include for the first time in the Legislative Council during an opening of Parliament, a Welcome to Country carried out by Noongar Leader Dr Richard Walley OAM.

In his opening address the Governor spoke about how the challenges of 2021 are quite different from those of 2017 when the 40th parliament sat for the first time, but reminded members that the duty before them today is the same – “To serve the public of Western Australia, to make their electorates proud and to take this great state forward.”
