Recognising brave West Australians

“Every now and then you get a gathering you preside over as Governor which is immensely moving and lets you know that we have in our community people of great character, and often for themselves unexpected character,” – Governor Beazley.

That gathering was the Royal Life Saving Society of Western Australia’s Bravery Awards, held today at a moving ceremony at the State Reception Centre in King’s Park.

As Patron of the Society the Governor paid tribute to those who risked their own lives to save others, before presenting awards to nearly 50 individuals in attendance.

“Some of today’s brave rescuers were members of the police and emergency services, some lifesavers at pools, many of them are people who just never expect or think they would face the situation of having to save a person’s life.”

You walk away from such a gathering feeling good about your community and with a greater sense of security and safety in the knowledge that there are people around us who will dip in to give you a hand if that is ever necessary.”

Bravery award recipients came from all over WA, with one as young as 10 years of age. Also in the audience were many of those whose lives were saved by these extraordinary acts of bravery.

“It is purely inspirational to see the people who are in receipt of the awards being judged by their fellow community members to have carried out activities and actions of most extraordinary bravery, and I congratulate  all award recipients.”
