The WIRF is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes. Led by Professor John Newnham AM, the WIRF is delivering the world’s first national preterm birth prevention program in partnership with the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance. Photo – The Governor with Professor John Newnham AM The event coincides with World Prematurity Day, a globally celebrated awareness day to increase awareness of preterm births, deaths and disabilities due to prematurity. It was a chance for supporters of the WIRF to hear about the world-leading research and contributions to preventing preterm birth which continues to save and improve countless lives. “If the results achieved in WA by the WIRF could be replicated on a global scale, we could potentially prevent more that 1.2 million preterm births and save the lives of more than 800,000 babies annually. “In my role, I continue to be amazed by the WIRF,” said the Governor.
