Beazley Medal winners announced, and new Commissioner for Children and Young People sworn-in

Lawrence Nheu from Perth Modern School and Charlotte Crossen from the WA College of Agriculture Cunderdin have been announced as the winners of the 2021 Beazley Medals for academic excellence.

The duo were presented with their medals at Government House this morning by the Governor and the Honourable Sue Ellery MLC Minister for Education and Training. Also joining in the celebrations were family members and representatives from both public schools.

Lawrence won the Beazley Medal: Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) for the highest examination marks across five ATAR courses in Year 12.

Charlotte was awarded the Beazley Medal: Vocational Education and Training (VET) based on her outstanding Year 12 performance in a VET program.

The Beazley Medal is the State’s top academic award and is named after the Governor’s father, Kim Beazley Sr, a former teacher and Federal Minister of Education.

In his speech, the Governor mentioned how proud he was of the the winners and commended them both on their hard work and commitment to their studies, particularly during the uncertainty and challenges faced over the passed 18 months.

“I congratulate all of today’s award winners and the whole 2021 Year 12 cohort for their efforts.”

“I would like to also acknowledge the support of families, friends, teachers and school staff,” the Governor said.

New Commissioner for Children and Young People sworn in

WA has a new Commissioner for Children and Young People after Ms Jacqueline McGowan-Jones was sworn in today by the Governor.

Ms McGowan-Jones, WA’s first Aboriginal woman appointed to the role, will officially take up her position on January 4, 2022.

Attending today’s special ceremony were students Huda Zaidi  from Perth Modern School and Benjamin Smith from Aranmore Catholic College who both played a key role in the selection of the new Commissioner as members of the interview panel.
