“Moving and Powerful” – the Governor visits Boola Bardip’s ‘Deep Light’ Exhibition

Tucked away in a corner of the WA Museum Boola Bardip is an exhibition not to be missed, with the Governor today taking a tour of ‘Deep Light: Illuminating the Wrecks of Sydney and Kormoran’

Describing it as ‘both moving and powerful’, the Governor visited the exhibition and met with its Curator Robyn Johnston and WA Museum CEO Alec Coles to hear about the painstaking effort that went into capturing the remarkable 3D underwater images of the wrecks of HMAS Sydney (II) and the German raider HSK Kormoran, now resting two kilometres below the surface off the WA coast.

The World War Two battle between the two ships in 1941 stands as Australia’s most tragic naval disaster, with all 645 men on the Sydney losing their lives, along with 81 men from the Kormoran.

Underwater images of the wrecks stand alongside poignant reflections from family members and descendants of HMAS Sydney, while a short 3D film – ‘Fire on the Water’ – takes viewers on a remarkable journey to the sea bed where both wrecks came to rest 80 years ago.

The free exhibit is showing at WA Museum Boola Bardip until February 2.
