Defending our waters with new patrol boats February 15, 2022 By Ashayla Dawn The Governor took a trip out to Henderson to visit Luerssen Australia, a subsidiary of NVL Group (Naval Vessels Lürssen, in order to view the progress of the SEA 1180 Offshore Patrol Vessel Program. Met by Head of Strategy and Government Relations Mr Matt Moran, Commercial Operations Manager Mr Malcolm Taylor, CFO Mr Darren McGill, Ship Manager Mr Matt Addison, and Security Officer Mr Doug Anderson, the first port of call was a quick presentation of Luerssen and their goals. The Governor learned that, currently, Luerssen is using 62% Australian Industry Content for this project through the use of Australian steel, labour and engaging with Australian small and medium enterprises. Their aim is to raise this percentage by creating purpose-made shipyards, dry and wet dock facilities and transforming the Henderson industrial space into a prime shipbuilding, maintenance and repair area. After discussions, the Governor was taken on a tour of the warehouse and was given the opportunity to walk through one of the current builds. Named the Arafura-class, the primary role of the OPV will be to undertake constabulary missions, maritime patrol and response duties. State of the art sensors, as well as command and communication systems, will allow the OPVs to operate alongside Australian Border Force vessels, Australian Defence Force units and other regional partners. The Governor described the versatile ship as being “the ship of the future”. Swearing In Mr Yaz Mubarakai MLA was today sworn in as a Parliamentary Secretary by the Governor at Government House.
