Launching the Australia Japan Business Council in Western Australia

The Governor officially launched the newly formed Australian Japanese Business Council (AJBC) at Government House this evening. The Governor and Ms Annus also welcomed the Ambassador of Japan to Australia, His Excellency Shingo Yamagami, and his wife Mrs Kaori Yamagami, on their second official visit to Government House.

With the attendance of many of Western Australia’s leading business identities there appeared to be clear enthusiasm for the AJBC. The AJBC is aiming to provide a broader platform for WA’s many specialist small to medium size enterprises developing trade and investment partnerships.

The opportunity you have identified in offering a broader platform for Western Australia’s many highly specialist small to medium size enterprises to access the Japanese market and develop trade and investment partnerships will be, I am sure, a welcome one among these industries.

Speaking at the launch Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, the Honourable Roger Cook MLA spoke of the importance of this relationship and the benefits of continuing to foster a close Japanese/Australian bond. The Governor elaborated on this, stating that,

“In international terms our relationship is, in so many ways, a benchmark in bilateral relations between nations.

The story of Japan’s contribution to our iron ore industry and development of our natural gas exports, is well known among you. These massive mining and energy corporate relationships are well catered for through forums such as the Australia-Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

One of my key priorities as Governor is promoting the capacity of our business community, and our education, training, and research institutions to engage internationally and across a diverse range of industries, such as:

  • cyber security and defence
  • international education, training, and research
  • automation, robotics, and data analytics
  • biotechnology, and
  • emerging energy technologies such as hydrogen and battery materials.

We are already world leaders in many of these fields and it will be through organisations such as this newly formed Australia-Japan Business Council that will assist enormously in continuing the growth of these industries.”
