The Governor chats with Short Back & Sidewalks Founder, and WA Local Hero 2022 Craig Hollywood. ‘Conversations at Government House’ – WA’s Local Hero 2022 Craig Hollywood March 1, 2022 By Carole Kerr Seven years ago Craig Hollywood had an idea about haircuts. It was a simple idea and one that this Scottish-born civil engineer and part time DJ/radio host wasn’t even sure would actually work. With the help of a few barber friends and a whole swag of enthusiasm Craig set up a makeshift barbers shop in a Perth carpark laneway and Short Back & Sidewalks – a service offering free haircuts to Perth’s homeless – was born. The idea behind it was simple – a free haircut, free from judgement – providing conversation and connection to people who all too often find themselves without either. Since that first cut in 2015 he and his now Australia-wide team of more than 350 volunteers, have delivered nearly 6500 free haircuts to people living on the streets or doing it tough. Named the WA Australian of the Year Local Hero for 2022 and Auspire’s Community Citizen of the year, Craig isn’t one to chase the spotlight, instead working behind the scenes to make a world of difference to Australian’s across the country.
