Governor Beazley with head pupils from Shenton College. Shenton College Eminent Speakers Program and ExCo March 29, 2022 By Ashayla Dawn The Governor travelled out to Shenton College, an independent, co-ed government school located in Shenton Park, to take part in their Eminent Speakers Program. This program asks inspiring people to share their careers and life experiences with students to foster and develop a sense of service to the greater community, as well as to inspire them to achieve their own personal excellence. Given the Governor’s long and distinguished political career, he was asked to discuss the role of the Governor in Western Australia’s political system, and to share his insights into Australian and international affairs. Law and politics students from senior school listen to the Governor speak. After his speech, the floor was opened to questions. Law and politics students from the senior school asked many pertinent questions, including about the meaning of sovereignty and governance in an increasingly complex multipolar world order. Reflecting on his time as Australia’s Ambassador to the USA, the Governor remarked on the importance of the relationship with the US, whose approach to politics and international affairs is centred around the concept of freedom, whereas Australia’s approach, by contrast, could best be summed up as relating to fairness. Governor Beazley was presented with a framed photograph depicting a visit he made to the school many years before. He said he was proud of his work as a member of the Hawke Government, where emphasis was placed on deeds over words – a phrase in Latin used by many schools – factum non verbum. ExCo The Honourable Dr Antonio (Tony) De Paulo Buti MLA BPE (Hons); DipEd; MIR; LLB (Hons); DPhil Minister for Finance; Aboriginal Affairs; Racing and Gaming; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests and the Honourable Simone Frances McGurk MLA BA Minister for Child Protection; Women’s Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services joined the Governor for a meeting of the Executive Council.
