The arts community is today mourning one of the great empresarios of theatre in Western Australia. Andrew Ross’s vision and passion for theatre has left a body of work that has interpreted our stories, landscapes, and history in a truly unique and impactful way. His career in theatre spanned more than forty years and through his dedication created the bedrock for our theatre industry in establishing the Playhouse Theatre in Education Company, which later became Acting Out and Barking Gecko, and as the inaugural artistic director of the Black Swan Theatre. At Black Swan, Andrew’s adaptations of seminal Western Australian works included Corrugation Road by Jimmy Chi and the Randolph Stow novels The Merry-go-Round in the Sea and Tourmaline, Sistergirl by Sally Morgan, Christopher Koch’s novel The Year of Living Dangerously and Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet, and Plainsong. Each of Andrew’s productions, many of which continue to be performed and studied, have left a legacy and body of work that has contributed enormously to redefining our contemporary cultural identity.
