Discussing defence matters and climbing aboard HMAS Stalwart March 9, 2022 By Ashayla Dawn The Governor took a trip down to Rockingham to visit the crew of the Royal Australian Navy ship, the HMAS Stalwart. HMAS Stalwart is a Supply Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) ship. It provides operational support for deployed naval vessels and combat forces by carrying and delivering fuel, dry cargo, water, food, ammunition, equipment and spare parts. It is set to deploy for the first time in mid-2022, having been commissioned in late 2021. Upon arrival at HMAS Stirling, the Governor was met by Commanding Officer Steve McCracken. Lunch was served in the Officer’s Cabin before a tour of the ship commenced. On the tour, the Governor met many sailors along the way, each explaining their role on the ship and how it plays into the bigger picture of the crew. The Governor received a short lesson on the changing face of communications on ships over the past few decades, including the technicalities, hazards and benefits of having mobile phones onboard. He enjoyed discussing tactics with the warfare officers and a chance to test some of the engineering equipment. After the tour, the Governor was asked to assist with presenting some awards to the crew, including Defence Long Service Medals and Clasps, Australian Service medals and Australian Defence Medals. To the gathered crew after the ceremony, the Governor spoke of the beauty of the ship, recognised the hard efforts of the crew to prepare her for her first deployment and expressed his admiration for those who choose to serve their country. Executive Council The Honourable Suzanne (Sue) Mary Ellery MLC, Minister for Education and Training, Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council and the Honourable Don Punch BPsych BSocwk MBA MLA, Minister for Disability Services; Small Business; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing, joined the Governor for a meeting of the Executive Council.
