The Federal Election has been called…

With the announcement on April 10th of the next Federal Election, due to be held on 21st May, the Executive Council met at Government House to discuss the effect of the call on Western Australia and finalise documentation allowing the process to continue within the state. The ministers present were the Honourable John Quigley LLB JP MLA Attorney General; Minister for Electoral Affairs and the Honourable Donald (Don) Thomas Punch MLA BPsych; BSocwk; MBA Minister for Disability Services; Small Business; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing.

Members of the Australian Electoral Office, Officer Gina Dario, Director of Operations WA Danielle Savage and Communications Officer Joshua Watson.

Following ExCo, representatives from the Australian Electoral Commission popped by to collect the signed writ. A writ is a document commanding an electoral officer to hold an election and contains dates for the close of rolls, the close of nominations, the polling day and the return of the writ. Whilst the Governor-General issues the writs for House of Representatives elections and the territories’ Senate elections, State Governor’s issue writs for states’ Senate elections. This practice reinforces the historical regard that the Senate is the ‘State’s House’, where each state of Australia is ensured equal representation.

The writ, signed during the Executive Council meeting, was collected by Australian Electoral Officer Gina Dario, Director of Operations WA Danielle Savage and Communications Officer Joshua Watson.
