Recognising philanthropic efforts and discussing defence matters

Mrs Georgina ‘Gina’ Hope Rinehart AO was recognised today for her distinguished service to the mining sector, the community through philanthropic initiatives, and to sport as a patron at a small ceremony at Government House.

Gina Rinehart is a well-known Western Australian figure who spent most of her childhood between the Pilbara, where she lived with her parents on a large sheep and cattle property, and the city, where she attended St. Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls. She became the Executive Chairman of her father’s business, the Hancock Prospecting Group, in 1992 and set about transforming the Group from one that was in difficulties and financially troubled, to a successful industry-leading innovator. Under Mrs Rinehart’s leadership, the Hancock Group has diversified from prospecting to include investments in iron ore, coal, beef, dairy and property.

Her philanthropic works were also recognised in the awarding of her Order of Australia. Mrs Rinehart and the Hancock Group’s charitable objectives support a number of medical, sporting, educational, health and community organisations. She serves as Patron of Australia’s internationally renowned Olympic swimming, rowing, volleyball and synchronised swimming teams and has received the honour of an Order of Merit from the Australian Olympic Committee.

Mrs Rinehart and the Hancock Group are also significant contributors to the SAS Resources Fund, Parkerville Children and Youth Care, Cambodian Children’s Fund, the Regional Achievement Awards, and has privately funded upgrades at hospitals such as St Vincent’s Sydney and Kingaroy Hospital.
