Djeran season at Government House

Djeran is upon us, one of the six seasons on the Noongar calendar. A time for change, for cooling breezes and the promise of rain.

It is also known as the season of Adulthood, and traditionally runs April through May. It is often regarded as a time for renewal. With the hot and drier days of Birak and Bunuru behind us, we see a shift in wind direction. The hot easterlies are replaced by cooler southerlies, bringing relief from the heat and much-needed rain.

An abundance of red wildflowers can traditionally be seen during Djeran, with the red flowering gum bursting into colour. Banksias also display their flowers, making them a favourite sweet food source for birds and small mammals.

You can learn more about Djeran in this video with Co-Director of the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together project, Carol Innes AM.
