Government Business, Iluka and appointing a judge – for the fourth time

Tuesday started with the bi-weekly meeting of the Executive Council. This week’s attendees were the Honourable John Robert Quigley MLA LLB, JP Attorney General; Minister for Electoral Affairs and the Honourable David (Dave) Joseph Kelly MLA BA Minister for Water; Forestry; Youth.

Rare Earths in Western Australia

Mr Tom O’Leary, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, and Mr Luke Woodgate, Group Manager, Investor Relations and Corporate Affairs, of Iluka Resources Limited, visited Government House today to brief the Governor on “Eneabba”.

Eneabba is a fully integrated rare earth refinery in the Mid-West of Western Australia that has recently entered Phase 3 – approval received, production to begin after a $1.2 billion investment from the Federal Government.

The duo informed the Governor of the refinery’s intended capability of processing rare earth feedstocks sourced from both Iluka’s portfolio and from a range of potential third party concentrate suppliers, serving as a long life rare earth concentrate source.

Fourth Time Around

His Honour Auxiliary Judge Bruce James Hamilton Goetze was today appointed as an auxiliary District Court judge.

First admitted as a legal practitioner in 1977, his areas of practice included personal injury, commercial litigation and professional disciplinary prosecutions. He conducted a large professional indemnity insurance practice, including matters of medical defence in personal injury claims and coronial inquests, as well as defending architects, accountants, barristers, insurance brokers, valuers and business brokers. Auxiliary Judge Goetze also oversaw inheritance matters and asbestosis litigation.

In 2020, aged 70, he retired as a judge of the District Court of Western Australia, of which he was first appointed to in 2006. During this tenure, Mr Goetze served as a member of the District Court Building Committee and Management Council Committee.

Since his retirement he has been re-appointed four times. This tenure is due to conclude in November 2022.
