Coming soon to a theatre near you: WA on the big screen

On May 10th 2022 the WA Screen Industry Strategy was launched. This 10-year vision aims to develop the film sector of WA. This evening, the Governor brought together key government stakeholders and members of the board of Screenwest in order to foster collaboration and showcase the screen industry’s potential for WA.

Screenwest is a not-for-profit screen funding organisation providing strategic leadership and support across WA for project development and funding production to grow a sustainable WA screen industry. They also facilitate programs to support Indigenous screen practitioners, diversity in the screen industry and professional skills and business development.

Representatives from local and State Government, production companies and the screen industry attended.

In his speech to the gathered assembly, the Governor commended the work of Screenwest;

“Screenwest does wonderful work in supporting and nurturing creative and technical excellence in writing, film production and post-production.”

While also asking those in attendance to get involved to support the screen industry in Perth;

“To help this development, we need the right infrastructure including film studios and centres of excellence so that our talented people don’t leave in favour of the Gold Coast or Hollywood, but stay here and tell our stories – to the world and to us.

Filmmaking is a collaborative process. And to get films made – and made here – we need to work together. Our creatives have to make a viable living. To help them, we need to get out and support local content, but equally, we need to make great content to get those bums on seats.”

The Honourable Paul Papalia CSC, MLA GradDipBusAdmin Minister for Police; Road Safety; Defence Industry; Veterans Issue and the Honourable Donald (Don) Thomas Punch MLA BPsych; BSocwk; MBA Minister for Disability Services; Small Business; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing joined the Governor for a meeting of the Executive Council. On a slight twist in tradition and in keeping with pandemic times, Minister Punch appeared virtually.

Stepping in

The Honourable Justice Martin reads the oath.

The Honourable Justice Kenneth James Martin was today sworn in to allow him the ability to stand in as deputy of the Governor to assist with matters of State when required.

Justice Martin, originally from Northam, was sworn in as Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 20 March 2009 after beginning his law career in December 1978. He has also served as an associate to the late Sir Ronald Wilson AC, KBE, CMG, at the High Court of Australia from 1980 to 1981.

The Governor appoints the Honourable Justice Martin.

Justice Martin then completed a degree of Master of Laws at the University of London (reading in Restitution, Maritime Law, general Insurance and International Business Transactions) before returning to Parker & Parker in 1982, where he was a partner from 1984 and in-house counsel from 1989 to 1991. He joined the independent bar at Francis Burt Chambers in 1992 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1997. He was also editor of the West Australian Law Reports from 1985 to 1996, and consulting editor from 1997 until 2000.
