An Ambassador visit, Australian Rock Art and a HistoryWest lecture June 9, 2022 By Ashayla Dawn Today at Government House, the Governor received His Excellency Mr Xiao Qian, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Australia. The Ambassador was accompanied by Consul General Long Dingbin and acting Director of Political Affairs Office in Chinese Embassy at Canberra, Gu Zihua. The Governor expressed the high regard in which Chinese Australians are held, and the vital importance to Australia of China, one of the world’s genuine superpowers. With transparency, goodwill and hard work, we can enhance our friendship to ensure maximum benefit from our shared interests in a peaceful and prosperous region. The Ambassador presented the Governor with a plate depicting pandas, a sign of friendship. Friends of Australian Rock Art Ms Judith Hugo and Dr Sue Boyd AM of Friends of Australian Rock Art visited Government House today to discuss their mission to protect, preserve and promote rock art. Ms Hugo and Dr Boyd briefed the Governor on the Burrup Peninsula art work and the increasing risks of erosion from industrial development in the area. Some of the art work has been dated back 50,000 years and it has been proven as some of the oldest art work in the world. The Governor was invited to the inaugural HistoryWest lecture at the UWA Club. During his address, the Governor spoke of his support for The Royal Western Australian Historical Society Inc and why he believes history matters. The following guest speaker, Dr Mathew Trinca AM, Director of the National Museum of Australia, delivered a lecture entitled ‘Reading Western Australia in the National Past’.
