Olá to the Ambassador of Brazil and a hat trick of appointments

The Governor welcomed His Excellency Mr Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, Ambassador of Brazil and Mrs Ester Steingiesser, Vice Honorary Consul to Government House today. Before the conversation turned to business, the Governor expressed his gratitude for the late Henry Steingiesser, Honorary Consul of Brazil in Western Australia who passed in June of this year – having served in WA since April 2000.

Following this, discussions turned to the return of Brazilian students to the State’s universities and the ongoing collaborations between WA and Brazil in the mining, mining equipment and technology and services sector. The Ambassador and Governor discussed the similarities between Australia and Brazil’s views and priorities to advance First Nations people, with around 13% of Brazil being classified as Indigenous Reserves, much of this within the Amazon.

Surprisingly, the pandemic has seen a 30% increase of Brazilians moving to WA – the Ambassador would love to see travel between the two locations more accessible in the future.
