Meeting with the Minister of State and the Government House Foundation

This morning the Governor welcomed the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Asia and the Middle East, the Right Honourable Amanda Milling MP.

Minister Milling was accompanied by:

  • Vicki Treadell CMG, MVO, the British High Commissioner to Australia;
  • Kirsty Packer, Head of Office, British Consulate (Perth);
  • Dr Ruth Wiseman, Head of Oceania and Myanmar Department at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office;
  • Phoebe Lundy, the Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary; and
  • Apsara McNaught, Foreign and Security Policy Team, British High Commission (Canberra).

The Governor and Minister Milling noted the strong ties between Western Australia and the UK, with a significant portion of Western Australians claiming British ancestry and strong UK representation among international visitors to WA. The strength of the relationship has been further demonstrated through the recent signing of the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement and the establishment of AUKUS.

As the UK Government works towards net zero emissions, the Governor emphasised WA’s capacity to assist the development of clean energy technologies due to its extensive deposits of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and rare earths.

The discussion also focused on maximising opportunities for people to live and work in each country, providing crucial skills and labour benefits in each jurisdiction.
