Royal Life Saving Society WA and Bravery Awards

The Governor was invited to attend the annual Royal Life Saving Society WA (RLSSWA) Bravery Awards ceremony to present recipients with their awards. The awards recognise and acknowledge the efforts and actions of everyday people within the community who have performed a rescue or resuscitation, applying their knowledge to save another’s life.

Addressing the crowd of recipients, families and dignitaries, the Governor reflected on the topic of courage.

“Being brave does not mean being fearless. Bravery means feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Courage is contagious.  When someone takes a courageous act, it stiffens the spine of those around them. Greek philosopher, Aristotle, observed that courage is the first of all human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees the others. But courage in and of itself is not enough.  It requires the decisiveness to take action, and the skill and knowledge to know what actions to take. Those we recognise here today had courage but also – through the training provided by Royal Life Saving Society WA – knew the right actions to take. And, importantly, they took them.”
