Rottnest Island Day 2: Celebrating Women in the Defence Force

Today saw the Governor and Mrs Dawson attend two momentous events on Rottnest Island.

Firstly, the unveiling of the Platinum Jubilee Plaque at the Kingston Barracks – marking the historical reign of our late Queen – by the Rottnest Foundation Inc. The Foundation was established in 1985 to encourage community involvement and protect and enhance the unique environmental, cultural and heritage assets.

And secondly, the 80th Anniversary of the Australian Women’s Army Service. In 1942, the first women joined the Australian Women’s Army Service and were deployed to Rottnest Island – a key strategic point of defence for WA.

After the commemorative service, the Governor and Mrs Dawson were taken on a tour of the military emplacements on the island by members of the Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association Inc.

This group was established in 1986 to promote an increased awareness and appreciation of the natural environment and historical significance of Rottnest Island.
