A plethora of visitors

The Governor’s day began with a meeting of the Executive Council, Attended by the Honourable John Robert Quigley MLA LLB, JP Attorney General; Minister for Electoral Affairs and the Honourable David Joseph  Kelly MLA BA Minister for Water; Forestry; Youth. Damien Stewart, the Executive Director of State Services at the Western Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet, was also present.

Marble Bar

The Governor and Mrs Dawson welcomed students from Marble Bar Primary School to Government House.

In 2021, Marble Bar Primary School were awarded the Governor’s School STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) 2021 STEM Meritorious Leadership Award in the Primary School Category. Today, representatives from the school visited Government House.

The Meritorious Leadership Award of the Governor’s School STEM Awards 2021 was awarded to the school for their encouragement of students engaging in the global world, whilst practising the core values of the local Nyamal community – celebrating Indigenous culture through an exciting, cutting-edge STEM Virtual World.

Marble Bar Primary School was also named as a winner of the 2022 Premier’s Science Awards, being named as a joint winner of the Chevron Science Engagement Initiative of the Year.

The school has collaborated with Elders and Airborne IT to create a first-of-its-kind VR World and Virtual Teacher Development Centre, showcasing the area’s Nyamal Culture, opening a door to the East Pilbara’s rich Indigenous cultures locally and globally.

The STEM project exemplifies collaborative partnerships between Elders, students, community and industry leaders including CSIRO, BHP, Atlas Iron, Roy Hill, Australian Schools Plus and Horizon Power.

“To see you use your STEM in such a unique way, where the cultural knowledge of your community is brought to life in the virtual world is quite incredible – and a concept that should be embraced by schools and communities everywhere,” the Governor said as he congratulated the students and staff.

Greek Consul

Mrs Georgia Karasiotou, Consul of Greece in Perth, paid a courtesy call to introduce herself to the Governor and discuss the current focus of the Greek Consulate in Perth – with a particular interest in tourism and energy.

The Greek community in WA is a strong and connected group, with success stories in major industries including real estate, fishing, and construction.

Mrs Karasiotou also spoke about her travels across WA, and how much her family have enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle.

Republic of North Macedonia

Her Excellency Biljana Stefanovska-Sekovska, Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia to Australia and New Zealand, visited the Governor this afternoon. Also in attendance was Zoran Coseski, Honorary Macedonian Consul WA and Chris Vrzovski, WA-Macedonian Chamber of Commerce.

WA is home to one of the highest Macedonian concentrations in Australia, with over 20,000 calling the State home.

Western Australia is also the only Australian state that exports seafood to North Macedonia and there are plans to enhance economic cooperation with the establishment of a Chamber of Commerce in WA.

There was talk too of forging stronger academic links between universities as well as the hope for agreements to make it easier for young people from Australia and North Macedonia to travel, study and work in each country.
