Launching Auspire’s Australia Day Activities

As Patron of Auspire (Australia Day Council of WA), the Governor and Mrs Dawson were pleased to host award winners and invited guests at Government House this morning, to launch their Australia Day activities over the coming week.

The Australian of the Year Awards carry the national narrative of “Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We’re all part of the story.”

Local Noongar man Barry Winmar provided a traditional smoking ceremony as guests entered Government House, and delivered a meaningful Welcome to Country.

In his address, the Governor acknowledged the traditional owners of the land, the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation and welcomed special guests including Members of Parliament, The Hon Dr Ken Michael AC, former Governor of Western Australia, The Lord Mayor Mr Basil Zempilas, Auspire Chair Bradley Woods and WA Australian of the Year recipients.

It is important as we stand today, side-by-side on Whadjuk Boodja, that we take a moment to reflect on what it means to be an Australian in 2023.

To ensure that as we journey forward – we do so together.

Respectfully embracing the significance of this land; listening and learning from its traditional owners; and forging meaningful partnerships as we continue to create a nation for all.

The Governor also paid tribute to the WA Australians of the Year, Professor Samar Aoun, Theresa Kwok, Nagmeldin ‘Peter’ Bol and James (Jimmy) Murphy and wished them success for the upcoming national awards ceremony in Canberra.

No matter what happens in Canberra next week, you all have a big year ahead of you – and I encourage you to really make the most of the profile that comes with your titles.

The Australians of the Year are announced on 25 January. For more information visit Auspire – Celebrate Australia Day.
