From as young as 5, through to 62 years of age, 51 new Australians officially joined our wonderful nation at the City of South Perth Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony this morning.

The Governor and Mrs Dawson were delighted to attend the event based on the picturesque foreshore at Sir James Mitchell Park, and after a flag raising ceremony lead by the Salter Point Sea Scouts, were moved by the Welcome to Country by Joe Collard and performances by the Djoona Dancers, and New Era Baha’i Choir.

They also heard the inspirational stories behind Community Citizens of the Year and Dr Ted Maslen University Award recipients, where volunteering, a drive to help others and a have-a-go attitude was a common theme.

In closing the formal proceedings, the Governor asked everyone to take inspiration from those stories, to embrace traditions and cultures, and to come together and celebrate why we love living in the wonderful country.

The Governor and Mrs Dawson were greeted by the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas at the Perth Town hall for the 2023 Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony this morning. The Lord Mayor and the Governor undertook official duties as part of the ceremony.

The Governor welcomed and congratulated new citizens and encouraged everyone to get involved in their communities.

“There are people in the Kimberley region who are doing it tough, but volunteers, emergency and defence personnel and governments are helping. I have a challenge for you: Get involved as a volunteer in your community. It doesn’t get more Australian than giving back to your community,” the Governor said.

The Governor was proud to present awards to Community Citizen of the Year Megan Krakouer, Young Community Citizen of the Year Sian Williams, Senior Community Citizen of the Year Jim Morrison and, Active Citizenship or Community Group – Short Back and Sidewalks. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.
