Discussing the ‘Body, Mind and Spirit’ of young people

The YMCA has evolved since it was founded in 1844 in London. Initially focussed on the welfare of young men, the organisation was built on the belief that community support could help renew strength in body, mind and spirit.

That core belief continues to be the focus of the organisation today, however their approach is more inclusive and widespread – providing opportunities for all children, even in some of our most remote communities.

To reflect the changing nature of the organisation, YMCA WA is now known as The Y. It’s sharpening its focus on the development of ‘Body, Mind and Spirit’ of young people.

Today the Governor met with The Y WA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tim McDonald and Youth Advocate, Maeson Harvey to discuss their work with youth around Western Australia, which aligns closely with many of the Governor’s priorities.

With a focus on empowering youth, tackling youth issues and disengaged youth in education, there have been some amazing successes as a result of The Y services in early education, community leadership, and health and wellness.

Meeting the new Consul-General of Viet nam

The Governor enjoyed meeting the newly appointed Consul-General of Viet nam, Mrs Nguyen Thanh for the first time at Government House today.

Mrs Nguyen assumed her post in Perth earlier this year and was keen to discuss the contribution of the Vietnamese community to Western Australia’s cultural vitality and economic development.

Discussion also included the important role in building strong ties between Western Australia and Vietnam to increase opportunities in trade, investment and education.

Vietnam is a large trading partner with Western Australia, with $2.6 billion of goods traded in 2021-2022.

WA Parks Foundation

The Governor and Mrs Dawson this evening hosted a reception to acknowledge and thank the supporters, sponsors and partners of the WA Parks Foundation, and to recognise the important work being done in support Western Australia’s 31 million hectares of conservation estate.

With 109 national parks, 17 marine parks and three natural world heritage areas in Western Australia, the Foundation has some important goals:

  • To connect people to our parks and nature and through collaboration;
  • And deliver projects that celebrate, protect and increase understanding and enrich our parks to increase people’s sense of connection.

Established in 2016, the success of the Foundation to date is owed largely to the contributions made by the many people that offer their time and expertise to deliver projects and programs that engage, inform and improve Western Australia’s conservation outcomes.
