The statue was unveiled in an intimate gathering at Government House. The statue of Balbuk Yooreel was unveiled today in the grounds of Government House, the first statue in the heart of Perth to honour an indigenous woman. The event began with a smoking ceremony by Mr Barry Winmar, Welcome to Country by Aunty Millie Penny before the Governor spoke of the life and significant legacy of Balbuk Yooreel. His speech can be read here. The Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, former Governor of Western Australia and Emeritus Professor Colleen Hayward AM observe the unveiling. A number of distinguished guests attended the unveiling, including Whadjuk Noongar elders and descendants of Balbuk who consulted on the project, past Governors of Western Australia, the Chief Justice and representatives of the State Government and the City of Perth. His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC, former Governor of Western Australia and the Honourable Benjamin (Ben) Sana Wyatt LLB, MSc look on. Sculpture by Joan Walsh-Smith and Charles Smith of Smith Sculptors. Farm Weekly The Governor shows Ms Swift some of his coin collection. The Governor received journalist Bree Swift from Farm Weekly. Ms Swift interviewed the Governor for a feature story in the popular newspaper. School Music and Arts program Students were encouraged to try ‘body percussion’. Students from Morley Primary School attended a performance of ‘Walking with the Wilderness’ at Government House as part of the School Music and Arts program before being taken on a tour of Government House.
