We are pleased to bring you the latest in the Conversations at Government House series where the Governor had the pleasure of chatting with Professor Helen Milroy.
Professor Milroy is a pioneering Aboriginal psychiatrist, researcher and mental health champion, well-known and highly respected across Australia. She is a descendant of the Palyku people of the Pilbara region, studying medicine at The University of Western Australia before becoming the first Aboriginal Australian medical doctor.
Helen worked as a GP and forensic medical officer before retraining as a psychiatrist so she could better address the trauma and mental health issues she was seeing in so many children and young people.
During this conversation, launched to coincide with NAIDOC Week 2021, Professor Milroy talks to the Governor on a range of different topics including youth mental health issues, what needs to be done for mental health in WA, how we can ‘Heal Country’ and how she feels when she visits her ancestral country.
We hope you enjoy the conversation with the 2021 Western Australian of the Year, Professor Helen Milroy.
