Coogee Common: Breathing life back into the old Coogee Hotel site

The Governor and Ms Annus visited Coogee Common to see the great work that owner Scott Brannigan and his team have achieved in creating this unique restaurant, lounge bar and gardens.

Built on the old Coogee Hotel site, a team of gardeners transformed the heritage buildings and their grounds over a two year period. This included rehabilitating the land, cultivating terraced gardens and planting rescued olive trees from Gingin, fig trees from Scarborough and Shiraz vines from Margaret River. The gardens, pollinated by resident bees, supply both Bread in Common, and Coogee Common, as well as their Common Farm Shop.

Built in 1894, the Coogee Hotel, or ‘Four-Mile Well’, was a meeting place for local market gardeners, quarry and shipping workers, four miles from Fremantle. They started looking for land where they could grow their own produce, implement their no-waste philosophy and commitment to a closed-loop farming system.

In 2018, the Bread in Common team moved in. They devoted countless hours to reviving the abandoned site, building new gardens and kitchens, while preserving the character of this landmark location for generations to come.

The seasonal tasting menus are built around their own produce, harvested daily. What they can’t grow, grind or ferment, they source from local, sustainable producers, who share a commitment to clean, ethical food production. The bread on the table is from wood-fired ovens, seafood from local waters, and the menu is designed to showcase the best local ingredients.

This is a great place to stop in for a drink or have a delicious meal.

Coogee Common is open every day from 11:30am for lunch and dinner. Bookings essential.
