Governor’s message to the Western Australian community

The Governor has today extended his thoughts, support and well wishes to all Western Australians during what is an unprecedented situation, as the WA community deals with two significant emergencies.

“At a time when we are already challenged as a community in the face of a developing and serious health situation that has forced many parts of our state into full lockdown, we are also being truly tested by the dangerous and unfolding disaster from the fires burning on the outskirts of Perth.”

My thoughts, those of my wife Susie and all at Government House are with every single West Australian at this incredibly difficult time. In particular we send every ounce of support to those of you who have lost a home, have been evacuated or are at risk in the fire zone. Know that every West Australian is behind you and are ready to help in any way possible.

To our incredibly brave and tireless firefighters, emergency services and emergency volunteers battling to do all they can to bring this dangerous situation under control and protect our community as best they can, we extend our heartfelt thank you.

We have seen the true soul and generosity that runs through every West Australian come to the fore in this time of need. Many of you have offered your homes, your spare rooms, your caravans to those most impacted and displaced by this fire. Others have offered to care for pets, provide food and clothing, furniture and toys.

This kindness is what makes our community great.

The Premier has announced the launch of the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund to support those most impacted by the fires. I encourage you to support the fund as best you can. You can find more details here.

Our strength, resilience, mateship and generosity are all defining traits of this wonderful community of ours. Please take care of yourselves and continue to support as you can those around you. Most of all please stay safe.”
