The Governor and Associate Professor Paul Haskell-Dowland, Associate Dean (Computing and Security) in ECU’s situation room Insight into ECU’s Cyber Security Operations Centre June 19, 2020 By Adele Hollywood The Governor was invited to tour the new Cyber Security Operations (CSO) Centre at Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup Campus. Professor Craig Valli, Director, ECU Security Research Institute, Associate Professor Paul Haskell-Dowland, Associate Dean (Computing and Security) and Professor Andrew Woodward, Executive Dean, School of Science guided the Governor through the Southern Hemisphere’s largest CSO Centre within a university. This state of the art CSO opened on 4th February 2020. The cutting-edge $3 million CSO offers Perth students (and those from interstate and overseas) first-hand experience in responding to cyber security threats, via real world training in monitoring, detecting and responding to cyber security incidents. “Western Australia hosts one of the most powerful cyber education and training facilities at Edith Cowan University in Australia. This centre is a significant advantage for WA as cyber is one of the new industries where sovereign capabilities are critical.” Governor Cyber security is worth $US120 billion annually across the world, and is expected to exceed $US340 billion by 2024. ECU is one of only two universities with an Australian Federal Government recognised Academic Centre of Cyber Security Excellence offering cyber security degrees. The WA Police cybercrime and high-tech crime units are moving their permanent home to a new building on ECU’s Joondalup campus next month.
