John Hutt Esq

1839 – 1846

John Hutt was the Governor of North Arcott in the Madras Presidency (British India) and came from a family famed for its colonisation efforts.

In late 1837, as Superintendent of Emigration for the South Australian Colonisation Commission, Hutt applied unsuccessfully for the governorship of South Australia.
However, his abilities impressed the Colonial Office and he was appointed Governor of Western Australia on 3 January 1839.

He reportedly held strong views about colonisation and was often in conflict with the colony’s settlers. He was Governor until 26 January 1846.
